Art Department
As a teacher of Intro to Art, Drawing, Painting, AP Drawing, AP 2D, and Advisory, I integrate Project-Based Learning (PBL) into each course, ensuring that students experience real-world applications of their skills. For example, in the Intro to Art class, students explore foundational skills such as drawing, painting, 3D sculpture, and mixed media. Lessons are enriched through connections to art history and contemporary community artists. A notable PBL project in this course is the Car Design Project, where students work in teams of four to develop a car company, solving real-world problems that connect art and design with subjects like math, science, English, and Spanish.

Drawing & Painting
In Drawing and Painting classes, students dive deeper into technical and creative processes.
-
Drawing Class: Students refine their technical skills through projects such as still life studies (analyzing light, shadows, and textures), collage drawings to explore texture, and character design projects. These activities connect students to master artists and build technical proficiency that bridges classroom learning with real-world applications.
-
Painting Class: Students master concepts such as color theory, color mixing, and light and shadow logic. Through projects like abstract art, impressionist pieces, still life studies, and storytelling portraits, game-background design, students engage in rigorous problem-solving and cognitive development. These projects also connect students to the professional art world by introducing techniques and themes seen in galleries and museums.
As the Chair of the Art Department, I organize the Art Show at the end of each semester, ensuring every student artist has a designated space to showcase their work. These exhibitions bring together parents, community members, and other RFK academies to celebrate the students’ creativity and dedication.

Advanced Placement
In AP Drawing and AP 2D classes, students are encouraged to analyze and draw inspiration from master artworks. I organize trips to renowned institutions like The Broad, The Getty, OTIS College of Art and Design, ASU FIDM, and more. These experiences allow students to analyze art critically, connect with historical and contemporary pieces, and enhance their understanding of artistic techniques and concepts.
These field trips are not limited to AP students—every course benefits from visits to museums and galleries, making art appreciation and exposure a cornerstone of the program. This real-world engagement empowers students to see themselves as part of a larger artistic community, inspiring them to create meaningful and impactful art.
